Blue Chip Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis 'Blue Chip') is a compact and low-growing evergreen shrub with a dense, spreading habit. Its foliage consists of scale-like blue-green needles that retain their color year-round, providing interest in the landscape throughout the seasons. It forms a dense mat, making it an excellent choice for ground cover, erosion control, or as a border plant.

  • Size: Height: 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm). Spread: 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 meters).
  • Sunlight: Blue Chip Juniper thrives in full sun to partial shade. Ensure it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for best growth and color.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil is crucial for the health of Blue Chip Juniper. It tolerates a wide range of soil types, including sandy or rocky soils, but it must be well-draining to prevent root rot.
  • Watering: Once established, this juniper is drought tolerant and only requires occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
  • Pruning: Pruning is generally not required for Blue Chip Juniper, but you can trim it lightly in spring to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged branches.
  • Fertilization: This shrub typically doesn't require regular fertilization, especially if planted in nutrient-rich soil. However, a balanced fertilizer applied in spring can promote healthy growth.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Winter Protection: Blue Chip Juniper is hardy and generally doesn't require winter protection. However, in extremely harsh winters, you can provide some mulch around the base of the plant to insulate the roots.
  • Pests and Diseases: Junipers are relatively resistant to pests and diseases, but occasional issues like spider mites or fungal infections may occur. Monitor the plant regularly and treat any problems promptly with appropriate methods or pesticides.
