Staghorn Sumac 'Tiger Eyes® Cutleaf' (Rhus typhina 'Bailtiger') is a unique and eye-catching cultivar of the native North American plant, Staghorn Sumac. It is known for its striking foliage, which undergoes dramatic color changes throughout the seasons.

Deeply cut, fern-like leaves that emerge in spring with a vibrant chartreuse or yellow-green color. As the season progresses, the foliage transforms into shades of orange, gold, and red, creating a fiery display in autumn. The serrated leaves resemble the shape of a tiger's eye, hence the cultivar name.

  • Sunlight: This cultivar thrives in full sun to partial shade. It requires at least six hours of direct sunlight each day for optimal growth and foliage coloration.
  • Soil: It prefers well-draining soil but can tolerate a wide range of soil types, including sandy or clay soils. It is adaptable to both acidic and alkaline conditions.
  • Watering: Once established, 'Tiger Eyes® Cutleaf' is relatively drought-tolerant. However, regular watering is essential during the first year after planting to promote root establishment. Water deeply and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Pruning: Pruning is generally not necessary for this shrub, but you can trim it in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged branches.
  • Fertilizer: Staghorn Sumac is typically not a heavy feeder. However, you can apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth.
  • Size: 'Tiger Eyes® Cutleaf' can reach a mature height and spread of around 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 meters). The plant has a spreading habit, and the branches arch gracefully, adding an interesting architectural element to the landscape.
