Alocasia Adora, also known as Jewel Alocasia, is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia. It belongs to the Araceae family and is highly prized for its large, heart-shaped leaves with prominent veins and a beautiful dark green coloration. The undersides of the leaves have an attractive reddish-purple hue, adding to its visual appeal. The Adora variety is a compact and smaller version of the Alocasia species, making it suitable for smaller spaces or as a houseplant.

  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Place it near a window with filtered sunlight, but avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. Insufficient light can lead to leggy growth, while too much light can cause leaf burning.
  • Temperature: This plant prefers warm and humid environments. Aim for temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Avoid placing it in drafts or near cold windows, as it is sensitive to temperature fluctuations.
  • Humidity: Alocasia Adora loves high humidity levels. Mist the leaves regularly or place a humidifier nearby to maintain humidity. Alternatively, you can create a pebble tray by placing a tray filled with water and pebbles beneath the plant. As the water evaporates, it will increase the humidity around the plant.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water your Alocasia Adora when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Ensure proper drainage by using well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogged roots, which can lead to root rot.
  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) every two to four weeks. Dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended strength to avoid burning the roots. Reduce or stop fertilizing during the dormant period (fall and winter).
  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged. A mixture of peat moss, perlite, and a small amount of orchid bark or sand works well.
  • Pruning: Remove any yellow or damaged leaves promptly to maintain the plant's health and appearance. Trim the plant sparingly to control its size and shape, but avoid excessive pruning, as it can stress the plant.
  • Repotting: Alocasia Adora generally doesn't require frequent repotting. Repot it when the plant becomes root-bound or every two to three years. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the current one to prevent excess soil moisture and ensure good root growth.
