Calathea Rattlesnake, also known as Calathea lancifolia, is a striking tropical perennial plant recognized for its elongated, lance-shaped leaves with a distinctive wavy edge. The leaves are light green with dark green, almost black, patterns resembling a rattlesnake's markings, giving the plant its common name. The undersides of the leaves are a rich, purplish-maroon color, adding a beautiful contrast. The leaves are known to fold up at night in a process called nyctinasty, showcasing the vibrant undersides.

  • Size: Typically grows up to 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) in height and spreads about 12 inches (30 cm) wide.
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Use room-temperature, filtered, or rainwater if possible, as Calatheas are sensitive to fluoride and chlorine.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity. Ideal for bathrooms or areas with a humidifier. Mist the leaves regularly if humidity is low.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix or a mix specifically for tropical plants.
  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in fall and winter.
  • Maintenance: Remove any yellow or damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy. Repot every 2-3 years to refresh the soil and accommodate growth.
