The Pygmy Peashrub (Caragana arborescens ‘Nana’) is a compact, globe-shaped dwarf form of the hardy Siberian peashrub, well suited to harsh prairie climates like Regina. It forms a dense, rounded mound of finely textured, bright green compound leaves that give it a soft, fern-like appearance. In late spring, small yellow pea-like flowers may appear, though flowering is usually light compared to standard caragana. Its neat, naturally spherical habit and extreme hardiness make it an excellent low-maintenance accent shrub for rock gardens, borders, and foundation plantings.

  • Height: 2–3 ft (60–90 cm)
  • Spread: 2–3 ft (60–90 cm)
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate
  • Light: Full sun for best compact shape and density
  • Soil: Very adaptable; thrives in poor, sandy, or clay soils common in prairie regions
  • Watering: Low water needs once established; water regularly during establishment
  • Hardiness: Zone 2, extremely hardy for Regina winters
  • Pruning: Minimal; can be lightly shaped in early spring if needed
  • Fertilizer: Generally not required; too much fertility can reduce compact form
  • Maintenance: Very low maintenance and drought tolerant once established
  • Uses: Rock gardens, borders, low foundation plantings, massing, and xeriscaping
