‘Northwind’ Switch Grass is one of the most upright and structural ornamental grasses available, prized for its strong vertical habit and exceptional hardiness. This native prairie grass forms a dense clump of steel-blue to deep green foliage that remains rigid and columnar throughout the growing season, resisting flopping even in wind or rain. In late summer, airy golden flower panicles emerge above the foliage, eventually maturing to warm tan seed heads that persist into winter. Its narrow, architectural form makes it an excellent accent in perennial borders, prairie plantings, and modern landscape designs while also providing habitat and winter interest.

  • Size: Height: 150–180 cm (5–6 ft) in bloom. Spread: 60–75 cm (24–30 in)
  • Flower plumes: 20–30 cm (8–12 in) airy panicles
  • Season of interest: Summer through winter
  • Light: Full sun
  • Soil: Adaptable; thrives in average to dry soils and tolerates clay

  • Hardiness: Zones 3–9 (excellent prairie performer)
  • Maintenance: Cut back to 10–15 cm in early spring before new growth
  • Spacing: Plant 60–75 cm apart for upright clumps
