Korean Fir ‘Golden Glow’ (Abies koreana ‘Golden Glow’) is a slow-growing, dwarf evergreen conifer valued for its striking golden-yellow foliage. The short, soft needles emerge bright yellow in spring, mellowing to a chartreuse tone through summer, then intensifying again in cooler fall temperatures. The undersides of the needles show a silvery cast, giving the plant a subtle two-toned shimmer when viewed from different angles. It forms a dense, low, irregular mound or spreading habit, making it an excellent accent for rock gardens, foundation plantings, or sheltered conifer collections. Mature plants may occasionally produce small upright purple-blue cones, adding further ornamental interest.
- Size: Height: 2–6 ft. Spread: 3–10 ft
- Growth rate: Very slow (approx. 2–5 inches per year)
- Hardiness: Zone 4; marginal in open prairie—best with protection
- Light: Full sun to partial shade; some afternoon shade helps prevent scorch
- Soil: Moist, well-drained, slightly acidic; amend heavy clay soils
- Water: Moderate; prefers consistent moisture and does not tolerate drought
- Wind protection: Essential—plant in a sheltered location to reduce winter burn
- Mulch: Apply a 2–3 inch layer to retain moisture and insulate roots
- Fertilizer: Light spring application of evergreen fertilizer if needed
- Maintenance: Minimal pruning; maintain natural form
- Prairie considerations: Sensitive to hot, dry winds and fluctuating winter conditions—avoid exposed or reflective heat sites
