The Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra) is a deciduous tree native to the eastern United States, particularly prominent in Ohio, hence its name. The Ohio Buckeye is known for its attractive, palmately compound leaves comprised of five leaflets, which turn a brilliant yellow-orange in the fall. In spring, it produces showy clusters of greenish-yellow flowers that are a magnet for pollinators. These flowers give way to spiky fruits, each containing one or two shiny brown seeds known as "buckeyes”.

  • Size: Ohio Buckeyes typically grow to be 20 to 50 feet tall with a spread of 20 to 40 feet.
  • Light: Plant in full sun to partial shade for optimal growth and flowering.
  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soils but can tolerate a range of soil types.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first few years of growth. Provide supplemental watering during dry spells.
  • Fertilization: Fertilize annually in early spring with a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth.
  • Pruning: Prune to maintain desired shape and remove dead or damaged branches. Pruning is best done in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
  • Pests and Diseases: Ohio Buckeyes are generally resistant to pests and diseases, but occasional issues may arise, such as leaf blotch or powdery mildew. Monitor for any signs of problems and treat as necessary.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Winter Care: Young trees may benefit from winter protection, such as wrapping the trunk with burlap, to prevent sunscald and frost damage.
