The Yellow Iceland Poppy (Papaver nudicaule) is a delicate, herbaceous perennial often grown as an annual in cooler climates. It boasts papery, cup-shaped flowers in a luminous yellow hue, perched atop slender, leafless stems that rise gracefully from a low mound of finely dissected, blue-green foliage. The blooms have a satiny texture and a slightly crinkled appearance, adding a soft, ethereal quality to the garden. Each flower opens in succession, offering a prolonged display of color through spring and early summer.

  • Size: Height: 25–40 cm (10–16 inches). Spread: 20–30 cm (8–12 inches).
  • Light: Prefers full sun; tolerates light shade in hot climates.
  • Soil: Well-draining, light soil; avoid heavy clay.
  • Watering: Moderate; allow topsoil to dry between waterings. Avoid overwatering, especially in humid conditions.
  • Fertilization: Light feeding with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer during active growth.
  • Deadheading: Regular removal of spent blooms encourages more flowers and prevents unwanted self-seeding.
  • Climate: Thrives in cool summer regions; not suited to hot, humid areas unless grown as a short-lived annual.
  • Propagation: Best grown from seed sown directly in situ or started indoors and transplanted while young. Avoid disturbing roots during transplanting.
