Juliet cherry is a compact, bush-type sour cherry developed for cold climates, valued for its ornamental form as well as its heavy fruit production. It forms a dense, multi-stemmed shrub with an upright to slightly spreading habit. In spring, branches are covered in clusters of white blossoms, followed by glossy, dark green leaves that provide a tidy, attractive canopy. The fruit is medium to large for a sour cherry, deep burgundy-red when ripe, with a rich, balanced flavour that is less sharp than traditional tart cherries, making it excellent for fresh eating, preserves, and baking.

  • Size: Mature height: 6–8 ft (1.8–2.4 m). Mature spread: 5–7 ft (1.5–2.1 m). Growth habit: Compact, shrub-form cherry, often multi-stemmed
  • Sun: Full sun for best flowering and fruiting
  • Soil: Well-drained loam or sandy loam; tolerates slightly heavier soils if drainage is good
  • Water: Moderate; water regularly during establishment and fruit development
  • Pruning: Minimal; remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring
  • Hardiness: Extremely cold-hardy (to about USDA Zone 2–3)
